China Three Gorges Corp, the company behind the world's largest hydropower project, announced plans Sunday to create an environmental flow to preserve a healthy eco-system in the Yangtze River.
The planned three-year project would run from the source of the river to the mouth across the Yangtze River Basi, CTGPC and The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) said at a signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding yesterday.
Environmental flow is a system meeting certain requirements of water quality, quantity and spatial temporal distribution.
Since the dam intercepted the natural water flow, failure to provide an environmental flow could have serious ecological consequences such as posing a threat to wild life in the river.
"We aim to promote the concept of green hydropower… Besides the dam and ship locks, we hope the project will be a platform for education and communication about environ-mental protection," said Cao Guangjing, president of the board of CTGPC.
Moreover, CTGPC has started a dam ecosystem restoration project along the Yangtze River including fish protection centers.
